DNAinfo.com reports that an agreement signed by the City of Chicago liquor commissioner and the current owner of the venue Eddie Carranza that will ban all “EDM” events from the Congress Theater. According to DNAinfo the city is loosely defined EDM as “music created by a DJ or multiple DJs primarily using specialized equipment and software instead of traditional instruments”.
Over the years Congress Theater has been a go to for a lot of artists but not all of them will have to say goodbye to this legendary venue. After looking deeper into this agreement there seems to be a loop-hole of sorts that will allow performances with live instruments to continue to be booked at Congress. Presumably that means artists like Big Gigantic, Keys N Krates, and many others can still keep the Congress on their radar by incorporating live instruments and vocals to meet the agreement. According to the agreement…
“… And an EDM performance shall be defined as a performance of Electronic Dance Music or any performance by a DJ or multiple DJs featured the playing of prerecorded music. Performers that incorporate electronic beats or prerecorded music in their acts shall be allowed, provided those performers either sing vocals or play an instrument(s) (or do both) during their performance.”
